DOMESTIC violence escalated in bushfire-ravaged communities, including Marysville and Kinglake, after Black Saturday, according to a new report.

As the third anniversary of the fire approaches, research by Women's Health Goulburn North East has substantiated an increase in abuse by some who fought and were affected by the fires.

Happy New Year to all in the Kinglake Ranges. This year we are entering the year of the Dragon and as flamboyant and surprising as this creature is, expect the year to be much the same! Regular readers of this column know that although I usually write on health issues, the first of each year I dedicate to the Chinese zodiac to consider the dynamic tendencies of the year ahead.

What is anger?

Anger is a normal emotional response.

Are there any benefits of being angry?

It allow us to be motivated and focused on what we need to do. It also gives us energy to achieve things.

How do you know when anger is ok and when it is not?

When we are in control of what we say and do, anger is ok. When we are no longer in control, then our emotions are controlling us rather than we controlling our emotions.

Does anger affect the way we see things and people?

We often see other people or things as being the problem. Since anger is a feeling, other people do not have the problem we have. If we are able to see that we have the problem then we can see that we need to find the solution.

How does anger affect children?

Children learn from their parents. If parents get angry and blame other people, children will do the same thing.

How can a parent  be different.?

Most parents find that children are very good at pushing their buttons, and it is very easy to get angry at what children do. We often get angry at the child rather than what the child does.

Try these strategies:

Give yourself a break.

Try taking a breath or counting before speaking to the child.

Perhaps even give yourself some timeout.

Remember.

Who is in control?  You or the child?
