An elected coalition government will allocate $10 million towards an early fire detection system, Opposition Leader Tony Abbott announced on the election campaign trail on Saturday.

Visiting Kinglake, one of the communities worst hit by the Black Saturday bushfires, Mr Abbott spoke with members of the Country Fire Association.

"Early detection gives communities more time to get out of an area should a fire start," a joint statement from Mr Abbott and his legal affairs spokesman George Brandis said.

Detection and warning is absolutely the key to survival. A shame that the Coalition when in office didn't invest in this type of capability - why didn't they, I'd ask?
